First Generation Community

A student is considered First Generation if your parents or guardians have not attended university, including out-of-home care experiences. You’re still First Generation if your siblings or other family members have attended university.

Being a First Generation student is a significant achievement and an exciting challenge. Our First Generation Community at ANU is here to help you get connected with peers from similar backgrounds, network with staff and alumni, and have some support while you make your own way in higher education.

The First Generation Community comes together for events throughout the year, bringing together First Generation students, staff and alumni. These events are great opportunities to build your network at ANU, get some advice from others in the community, and share your own experience.

Events include celebrations, panel conversations, networking opportunities, and casual coffee catch ups.

We also send out a bi-monthly newsletter to keep you up to date with First Gen resources, stories, and event invitations. Sign up using the link below!

Quotes from the community

There is never only one path. It may not be linear; it may not always be forward, but if you know what you want, you will find a way.

[Being part of this event I felt] understood – people had similar experiences that made me feel SEEN

Listening to the panel normalised my own experiences

I enjoyed that it didn't feel like a network or ‘social climbing’ event - felt much more approachable and enjoyable!
