Changes to your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

You may need to apply for a change to your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) if you need more time to finish your degree or if you are changing from another visa to a student visa (subclass 500) while studying at ANU.

Important information before you apply

A CoE extension and a student visa application are separate processes. If you need to remain in Australia to finish your degree, you are responsible for making sure you have a valid visa.

If you need a CoE extension to support your visa application, we strongly recommend you apply for this at least three months before your current student visa expires. This gives ANU time to review your application and allows you time to apply for a new student visa, if needed.

It is important that you lodge any application for visa extension with the Department of Home Affairs well in advance of the expiry of your current visa. You will also need to ensure you have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the required visa period and meet any other requirements for lodging a Student visa application.

For further advice on the visa application process, visit the Department of Home Affairs website.

For more information about OSHC, visit the Australian Government's OSHC information page.

Reasons you may be eligible for a CoE extension

You may be able to apply for a CoE extension for one of the following reasons:

  • Failed or incomplete course requirements: You have failed a course or have not completed all the course requirements needed for your degree.
  • Approved reduced study load or program leave: ANU has approved you to study fewer units or take leave from your degree.
  • Compassionate or compelling circumstances: You have experienced significant circumstances, such as illness, that have affected your studies and resulted in an approved reduced study load or program leave.
  • Academic progression or course sequencing: Your academic progress or the order in which you need to complete your courses means you need more time to finish your degree.
  • University or provider circumstances: Circumstances involving ANU have affected your ability to finish your degree on time.

Each application is considered individually. You may need to provide supporting documents, and meeting one of these criteria does not guarantee approval.

Application and outcome process

Before applying, check your current CoE end date and the courses you still need to complete to finish your degree. Check when these courses are offered so you can plan when you expect to finish your studies.

If you need help with your study plan or expected completion date, contact the ANU Student Hub for program advice.

What documents do I need to provide?

The documents you need to provide depend on the reason for your application.

  • Approved reduced study load or program leave, or failed or withdrawn courses: ANU will check its records for this information, so you generally do not need to provide additional documents for these circumstances.
  • Course availability or study plan requirements: Upload a copy of your study plan showing the courses you intend to enrol in each semester until you finish your degree.
  • Applying for a CoE for the first time: Upload a copy of your current passport if you do not already have a CoE.

Check that you have included all the required information and supporting documents before submitting your application.

Complete the request for Change to Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) form.

Make sure you complete all required sections and include any supporting documents needed for your application.

ANU will review your application and email you the outcome within 5–10 business days.

If your application is approved, your updated CoE will be sent to your ANU student email address.

If your application is not approved, your outcome email will explain the decision and outline any next steps, including how this may affect your study plans and student visa.
