ANU Springbank Circle Long Lunch celebrates another year of lasting impact

02 Oct 2026

We all aspire to leave a positive and lasting impact on the world. At The Australian National University (ANU), a special group of donors are ensuring their legacy by leaving a gift to the University through their will.

On Saturday 26 September 2026, the University celebrated its bequest donors at the ANU Springbank Circle Long Lunch - a unique occasion where these donors, alongside the University's top leadership, engage in meaningful discussions about their philanthropy and learn about the long-term impact of bequests.

As the ANU community expressed its gratitude, the lunch gave bequest donors a glimpse of a future where their generosity is creating transformative learning experiences for students and advancing cutting-edge research.

Guests were joined by Dr Gordon de Brouwer AO PSM FIPAA, ANU Chancellor, and Professor Joan Leach, Acting Provost and Senior Vice-President, who each spoke about the powerful ways donors are making a difference at the University.

"By pledging a gift to ANU in your will, you are leaving an enduring legacy that will do more than just change a life. Thank you for your part in uplifting communities, making breakthroughs, and creating solutions to the grand problems of society forever and for good." said Professor Leach.

The lunch also provided an opportunity for guests to engage with distinguished speakers and gain insights into the diversity of research and programs at ANU.

Among this year's highlights was a presentation from exceptional PhD student Cecilia Nie – who, beyond her normal academic pursuits, was a finalist and People’s Choice winner of this year’s Three-Minute Thesis competition.

Cecilia captivated everyone in attendance with her ability to explain her research through accessible and engaging narratives, a stark contrast to the typical 80,000-word thesis.

Dr Brad Tucker also presented about his work on the Artemis II mission, the Giant Magellan Telescope and tweaks to ACT streetlights which are helping astronomers get a better view of the night sky.

The quality of research and exceptional communication skills of Cecilia and Brad struck a chord with donors. The room buzzed with conversations sparked by the speakers' insights and the possibilities that their discoveries could unfold.
