International Alumna of the Year

Congratulations to Dr Mari Pangestu (BEc '79, MEc '81, HonLittD '13), our International Alumna of the Year for 2022.

Mari grew up in the ANU, when her father was one of the architects of the Indonesia Project in 1966. Since then, she has gone on to receive an Undergraduate degree, a Masters degree, and an Honorary Doctorate from ANU - stepping stones, through her 25 years in academia, second-track processes, international organizations and government.

Mari has worked in areas related to international trade and investment. She did trailblazing work in her roles as Indonesia's Minister of Trade from 2004 to 2011, and as Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy from 2011 to 2014. All the while, she has continued to give back to the University - she is a frequent guest speaker, a contributor to the East Asia Forum, and a vital connection between ANU and Indonesian alumni.

She is currently managing director of Development Policy & Partnerships at the World Bank in Washington DC. In this role, she ensures knowledge and expertise can contribute to development policy that is effective to the interests of developing countries.
