Changing your course

Most variations to your enrolment can be made using ISIS. See below for information about adding, swapping or dropping a course.

Add a course

Adding a course can be done by going to the 'Main Menu' in the top left corner of the ISIS home screen, select 'ISIS' from the menu options, and then 'Enrolment' and using the 'Add' button. If you are a new student please reference the ANU student system guide provided on this page.

If you are unable to use ISIS to add a course then you will need to see your ANU College for assistance.

Load

You are normally only permitted to enrol in a maximum of 24 units per semester or session.

If you are already enrolled in 24 units, and you want to add another course, you will need to drop a course first or use the swap option in ISIS. If you want to take more than 24 units you will need to seek permission from the ANU College that delivers your program by completing the Application for overload of enrolment.

Deadlines

The addition of courses will normally only be permitted up to the end of the second week of each semester. Deadlines vary for non-standard sessions (summer, autumn, winter and spring).

Additions after the deadline may be permitted with permission from the Course Authority and Delegated Authority. Late applications must be submitted using an Application for enrolment change.

No courses will be added after the relevant semester or course census date.

Swap a course

If you have changed your mind and would like to change your courses, you can use the SWAP function on ISIS. This will drop the old course and add a new one in its place. Swapping a course can be done by going to the 'Main Menu' in the top left corner of the ISIS home screen, select 'ISIS' from the menu options, and then 'Enrolment' and using the 'Swap' button. If you are a new student please reference the ANU student system guide provided on this page.

If you are unable to use ISIS to add a course then you will need to see your ANU College for assistance.

Drop a course

Dropping a course can be done by going to the 'Main Menu' in the top left corner of the ISIS home screen, select 'ISIS' from the menu options, and then 'Enrolment' and using the 'Drop' button.

If you are unable to use ISIS to drop a course then you will need to complete the Application for enrolment change instead and submit it directly to your College.

Load

International students are required to complete an Application for reduced study load form if you are dropping below 24 units of study. If you are dropping a course to take another one, you will need to use the swap function on ISIS.

Deadlines & fees

Dropping a course on or before the course census date will remove it entirely from your record and you will not be liable for any associated course fees.

Dropping a course after the relevant census date will result in the course being recorded as a withdrawal (WD) on your academic transcript and you will remain liable for any relevant course fees. Students who wish to withdraw after census date dues to extenuating circumstances may be eligible for a late withdrawal without failure. Circumstances that may be considered for a late withdrawal include:

  • significant illness
  • death of a family member
  • professional redeployment
  • unavoidable travel.

Dropping a course after the Friday of week 10 of semester (for semester-based courses) will result in the course being recorded as a withdrawal with failure (WN) on your academic transcript and you will remain liable for the relevant course fees.

Courses cannot be dropped after the commencement of the relevant semester's examination period.

If you are an international student dropping all of your courses for a semester or academic year prior to the relevant census dates, you are required to apply for leave from your program.

Other considerations

If you receive Youth Allowance or Abstudy you should be aware that changing your full-time or part-time status may affect your eligibility to receive such payments. Centrelink is able to advise students of their eligibility.
