Introducing our new Provost and Senior Vice-President

27 Mar 2024

Hi everyone,

I’m delighted to share that after a competitive, international recruitment process we have appointed Professor Rebekah Brown to the role of Provost and Senior Vice-President.

As Australia’s only national university, we have an important and distinctive mission that is built on a remarkable legacy.  As we shift our focus to shaping a university fit for the future, we will need to amplify the impact of our research and educational endeavours and foster a dynamic, inclusive and diverse community.

As we embark on this transformative journey, good leadership will be essential for navigating those opportunities and fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence. I’m excited that Rebekah is joining our community of remarkable leaders and colleagues to ensure that we continue to deliver and improve on our commitment to excellence, distinction and impact.

Rebekah is a highly accomplished academic with extensive leadership experience and is a passionate advocate for inclusion, equity, diversity and First Nations self-determination. She joins us from Monash University, where she was most recently Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Vice-President.

During her time at Monash University, Rebekah conceived and led six research entities across multiple continents, as well as a ground-breaking $70 million health research program spanning several countries. During her concurrent tenure as Director of the Monash Sustainable Development Institute from 2014 to 2018, she set a strategic focus on sustainability leadership across the Indo-Pacific and led the development of new sustainable development education and research programs, as well as student entrepreneurship programs to address climate change and social inequality. She is a multi-award-winning scholar and educator in her own right, specialising in urban water, sustainable development and transdisciplinary methods.

Please join me in making Rebekah feel welcome as she and her family settle in Canberra ahead of her start date on 17 June.

Cheers,
Genevieve
