McDougall Endowment for geochronology
Ian McDougall pushed the boundaries of science and had a profound impact on his colleagues, his students and the scientific world.
Ian McDougall (ANU PhD 1961) distinguished himself as a leader in the plate tectonics revolution, developing potassium-argon geochronology and its application to many Earth Science issues, including the geomagnetic polarity timescale. McDougall was instrumental in establishing the reputation of the Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES) at ANU as a world-class research institution.
Ian also built and maintained facilities recognised internationally for their excellence and for their application to major research controversies. His work was essential in the developments in Earth Science from fixed continents, through 'continental drift' leading to the plate tectonic revolution.
The Ian McDougall Scholarship has been created in recognition of Emeritus Professor Ian McDougall FAA (1935-2018). The McDougall Family, the RSES Executive and former colleagues from institutions around the world strongly support this initiative, specifically as it is aimed at investing in the next generation of Geochronology students.
