3 June 2022
Council met in person for the third meeting of 2022.
Mabo
Council reflected on the 30th anniversary (3 June 1992) of the landmark High Court (Mabo) decision that recognised the land rights of the Meriam people, the traditional owners of the Murray Islands (QLD).
Federal Election
Council noted the outcome of the election on 21 May 2022 and the change of government, including the appointment of the new Minister for Education, the Hon Jason Clare MP.
Council membership
Council welcomed the new professional staff member, Mr Millan Pintos-Lopez, to his first meeting.
Council farewelled Ms Sonia Jeena, whose term will end upon graduating from the University in Mid-July.
Council also farewelled Professor Suzanne Cory AC. Suzanne's term will end on 30 June 2022 after eight years of distinguished service.
Appointments
Council is looking forward to Professor Sarah Pearson joining as a member. She was appointed by the (then) Minister for Education and Youth for a four-year term, commencing on 1 July 2022.
Ms Naomi Flutter was re-appointed by Council as Pro-Chancellor for the duration of her extended Council term, from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2024 (two years).
Vice-Chancellor's Report
Council considered the Vice-Chancellor's report, including updates on National Reconciliation Week, the Federal election, engagement with the new government and senior executive staffing matters.
New Council Committee - Student Safety and Wellbeing
Council formally approved the establishment of the new Council Committee established to oversee and advise Council about student safety and wellbeing matters. Council also approved the Committee's charter and membership, which will include Council members, ANU students, and external subject matter experts.
Other matters
Council considered other significant matters, including the ANU Statement on Modern Slavery 2021, Information Security, the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) re-registration process, implementation of the Digital Masterplan and audit-related updates.
National Reconciliation Week 2022
Following the meeting, which included consideration of the University's implementation of its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), Council members assembled to hear the National Reconciliation Week Lecture.
The Chancellor introduced Ms Andrea Kelly, Acting Group Manager - Social Policy and Programs Group at the National Indigenous Australians Agency, who delivered the lecture.
