Bernard Wheelahan Latin American Travel Grant

Overview

Each year the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences ("the college") may offer an award known as the Bernard Wheelahan Latin American Travel Grant ("the award").

The objective of the award is to assist a student with costs associated with travel to and within Latin America for the purposes of undertaking fieldwork, or an exchange or internship.

Funding for this award has been provided by a bequest to the Australian National Centre for Latin American Studies (ANCLAS) through the generosity of Pacific-Hydro Pty Ltd.

Mr Bernard Wheelahan chaired the Council on Australia-Latin America Relations from its inception in 2001 until 2010. He has had extensive business experience in Latin America and has been a major force in strengthening ties between Australia and the region

Field of study

All, with specific travel to Latin America

Eligibility

The award is available each year to a continuing ANU student who is:

(a)            a domestic or international student 

(b)            enrolled in an undergraduate, postgraduate or HDR program;

(c)            enrolled in an approved exchange or internship program within Latin America, or

(d)            is a PhD student travelling to Latin America, including the Caribbean islands, in order to undertake in-country research (eg fieldwork, archival work, study of museum collections)

Benefits

The value of the award is $1,800. The award is payable in one instalment on acceptance of the offer to enable the recipient to travel at the beginning of semester, unless otherwise stated in the letter of offer.
