Applying for exchange at ANU

Applying for exchange

If you are a current university student overseas and your home university is one of our exchange partners then you may apply to study as an exchange student. Partner agreements simplify the exchange procedures for you, and tuition fees continue to be paid to your home university as though you are continuing study there.

Exchange students must meet the following criteria.

  • Approval and nomination to study at ANU by their home university.
  • Meet the ANU English language requirements.

Step 1: Before applying

Talk to the exchange office at your home university about the requirements for taking part in our exchange or study abroad program, and confirm that your home university has a general or college specific exchange agreement with ANU.

Be sure to allow plenty of time to meet all the necessary deadlines at your home university.

Step 2: Apply to your home university

Apply to your home university for exchange. Once approved, they will nominate you to ANU and provide us with your contact information.

Step 3: Receive your invitation

Subject to ANU accepting your home university's nomination, you will be invited by ANU to apply for your exchange before the application deadlines.

Step 4: Complete your online application

Complete your online application with supporting documents for a non-award exchange program at ANU.

Apply online using the online application manager by the relevant semester's application deadline. Late applications may not be accepted.

Students must not apply to the exchange program at ANU unless they have been officially nominated by their home institution to do so, and instructed to follow the application procedures. Students who are not nominated to study at ANU by their home institution can consider studying at ANU on the fee-paying study abroad program.

Students applying for the exchange program must supply the following original or certified documentation, which can be uploaded during the online application process.

  • Academic transcript and current course enrolment (including translation if not in English).
  • English language test results (such as TOEFL or IELTS) if applicable.
  • Any other relevant documents.

Step 5: Await confirmation of your offer from ANU

ANU will ordinarily communicate with you and your home university exchange office about your offer within one month after the application closing date guideline. We may require additional information, so please ensure you keep in touch with your home exchange office as well as monitor your email account.

Once your offer is released to you, we ask that you accept it promptly. Once accepted, ANU will be able to produce the electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) which you will need for your student visa.

Step 6: Make final arrangements

Course approvals

In the lead-up to the start of your semester at ANU, we will communicate with you about your course approvals. Because not all of your listed courses will be approved we may need to communicate with you one or more times to get your approvals up to a full semester's load worth of courses, so please ensure you monitor your email account during this time.

Fees

Continue paying tuition to your home university.

Student visas

If you accept the offer of a place and your enrolment is confirmed, you will then be provided with an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) which will enable you to apply for a student visa. All exchange and study abroad students must obtain a subclass 500 student visa before arriving in Australia.

For further information please contact the Australian Embassy in your home country or visit the Australian Department of Home Affairs website

Overseas student health cover

It is a condition of your student visa that you take out Overseas Student Health Cover. ANU will assist you in making this payment before a student visa is issued.
