Living in a Self-catered Residence

Living in a self-catered residence provides great flexibility for your University lifestyle.

Learning to cook is part of transitioning to independent living.  Self-catered residences give you time to develop this important life skill in a supportive environment.

There are plenty of options available to make cooking easy and that suit your own food preferences and schedule.

Many recipes and step-by-step videos are available online for those just learning to cook, or we encourage you to sign up for cooking classes before your arrival.  You can also learn to cook together with your fellow residents - this is a great way to make connections and friends.

You can receive your home delivery supermarket orders at your residence.  We also have an on-campus independent supermarket which sells groceries and fresh produce, including fruit & veg and meat.

Many of our self-catered students choose to utilise a wide range of local meal service providers including both prepared meal services (e.g., My Muscle Chef, Lite & Easy, etc.) or meal preparation services where the ingredients and cooking instructions are delivered straight to you (e.g., HelloFresh, Marleyspoon, Dinnerly etc).

There are a wide range of cafes and restaurants on campus and nearby, and you can also utilise other meal delivery options such as Uber Eats, Menulog, Easi, DoorDash etc. for those times when you don't feel like cooking, and want to stay in.

The residences also partner with ANU Thrive who support students through cooking classes, access to kitchen gardens and to other healthy lifestyle support.

Many of our students provide us feedback that learning to cook together in the communal kitchens of our self-catered residences is one of their favourite social occasions where they get to cook and eat together, share ingredients and learn new recipes.

The QR codes for a variety of meal services are included in the 'Reference documents' section.
