What is First Generation celebration campaign about?
The Engagement and Success team are hosting the inaugural First Generation Celebration event on 21 April 2021. This event is part of our larger campaign which will be running throughout April 2021. Through this campaign, we aim to connect students, alumni and staff who are first-generation to share stories, establish connections and increase the visibility of this cohort at ANU.
Why are you running this campaign?
Research* shows that almost half of Australia's university student population are 'first in family' (FiF)/first generation students. These students are known to experience a greater number of challenges throughout their journey towards and through higher education. Within Australia, 26 percent of this group reported considering leaving university in their first year of university study, a figure that increases to 34 percent for later year students.
We believe that our ANU community holds a great potential to support and inspire each other and challenges that the group has overcome. Through this campaign, we aim to connect students, alumni and staff who are first-generation to share stories, establish connections and increase the visibility of this cohort at ANU.
Who are considered first generation?
Staff and students who are first in their immediate family to attend university are considered first generation. If your siblings attended university but your parents did not, you are considered first generation. This definition applies to both international and domestic students, as well as postgraduate and undergraduate students.
How can I participate?
We have received an overwhelming response from our ANU community and are no longer accepting EOIs for Faces of ANU and podcast interviews. We will begin our campaign on the second week of April 2021 and will host an in-person event on the third week of April. If you'd like to be notified about our in-person event, please leave your details via this form so that we can contact you with events information.
If you identify as a first generation student, staff or alumni and are interested to participate in this campaign, there a number of things you can help us with. This includes:
- Being interviewed for Faces of ANU
- Attend our event on 21st April 2021
- Being interviewed for our podcast series later in the year
If you are interested to participate in any of the above, please fill in our form so that we can connect with you:
