FAQs: Semester 2 2020 Exchange Cancellations

In light of the continuation of the COVID-19, the University has decided to cancel S2 2020 exchange programs to all destinations.

The Global Programs team are deeply disappointed by the news, however, the wellbeing of our staff and students is always our highest priority

We are in direct communication with all affected students and partner communications. If you are due to go on exchange in Semester 2 2020, please check your emails for this update. We have also put together a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) to assist you with some of your enquiries. 1. How does COVID-19 affect my exchange placement in Semester 2 2020? 

We regret to advise you that the ANU decision to suspend travel approval for programs scheduled in 2020 means that the University has made the decision to cancel Semester 2 2020 Exchange programs to all destinations. 
 
This decision was not made lightly and we understand that this can be disappointing for many. The Global Programs team are deeply disappointed by the news, however, the wellbeing of our staff and students is always our highest priority.  
 


2. I have made travel and accommodation bookings for my S2 2020 Exchange, what should I do? 
 

Students have been advised NOT to book any overseas travel relating to this experience. If you have booked any flights intending to go on exchange in 2020 S2, you are responsible to cancel any bookings made relating to going on exchange and seek a refund where possible. 
 
Please note that the university's Insurer (CHUBB) has confirmed that COVID-19 was a foreseen circumstance effective 4:00pm on March 2 2020. This means that new paid travel arrangements made after this date may not be eligible for expenses incurred that relate to COVID-1 

 

3. Do I need to contact my host institution? 

No. Global Programs have contacted all our exchange partners and communicated the ANU decision to cancel the exchange programs for S2 2020. All students are automatically withdrawn from S2 2020 Exchange.  
 
Some partners may require students to complete a form or other administrative processes for withdrawal. Please do so if applicable or required by the partner institution.  

 

4. Do I need to withdraw my application on the Global Programs System? 

We have updated all the students' statuses in the Global Program System automatically to 'withdrawn'. You will not be required to action this. 
 

5. Can I defer my exchange place to the following semester? 

Unfortunately, we are unable to support students to defer their current placement to another semester. This is due to the reciprocity with partners, the availability of spaces, the volume of affected students and impact of deferral on individual students' academic progression. Students are encouraged to reapply for future programming where they have flexibility in their degree to do so and will be prioritised in 2021 exchange rounds. 
 

 

6. I have contacted my host institution and they have agreed to offer me a deferral, can I defer my exchange placement? 

Unfortunately we are unable to support deferrals. If you had received any communications from the partner, the offer is no longer valid. Please contact Global Programs for clarification if you have received an offer from the partner for 2021. 

 

7.I am willing to accept any risk associated with overseas travel and studies. Can I go anyway? 

No. You are not approved to travel by the university. You do not have approval to undertake the exchange program with the partner university and the exchange spot has been cancelled for 2020 S2. You will not receive ANU academic credits and will not be covered by ANU Travel Insurance.  
 

 

8. If I reapply for Semester 1 or 2 2021 exchange rounds, will I be guaranteed the same spot? 

No. It is not possible to guarantee the same partner for students who had received exchange placements for S1 or S2 2020, for 2021 applications. Exchange spots per partner are limited.  Students interested in going on exchange in 2021, must reapply for the exchange program and provide a new room available in your degree (RAID) approval to go on exchange in 2021, as decided by your academic college. 

 

9. What if I cannot move my ANU courses around or do not have 24 units left in my degree to fit in exchange in 2021 but I really want to study overseas? 

If you do not have 24 units available and can no longer fit in exchange, we would suggest you look at other opportunities, like short course options.  

 

10. What other future program options do I have? 

Student can apply for short course options where you only need to have 6 units available in your degree to participate. There are many short course options available to students, which are coordinated through Global Programs, academic colleges, exchange partners or through independent providers. Please visit: https://www.anu.edu.au/students/careers-opportunities/global-programs/short-course-options 

 

11. I have received funding (I.e: NCP funding, NCP grant, Westpac Scholarship) for my exchange, do I need to repay this? 

Students who have already received funding intended for S2 2020 will be contacted by Global Programs to discuss specific funding requirements.   
 

12. Do you have any other support available for affected students?  

Students can access support via the ANU Crisis Support line which is a 24/7 support service available to ANU students experiencing situational stress, emotional difficulties and mental health concerns. The best way for you to access this is to text them: SMS Text message service:  +61 488 884 170. 

ANU Counselling is offering services through digital mechanisms during this period of physical distancing and self-isolation. You can contact them directly to book an appointment: counselling.centre@anu.edu.au 

 

13. How can I contact ANU Global Programs? 

ANU Global Programs are offering a range of virtual services, including virtual drop ins and a phone call back service.
