Planting a future for ANU
|
As we celebrate our 75th year, we look to the future and consider what kind of university we want to be, particularly from an environmental perspective.
To help our physical campus environment thrive for another 75 years, students from the Fenner School of Environment and Society (pictured) planted tree saplings in front of Chifley library. Trees that were in poor health were replaced with Eucalyptus michaeliana, a species better equipped to sustain the damaging impacts of climate change. |

Bake your PhD
|
Students from the Research School of Earth Sciences recently took part in the annual Bake Your PhD competition. Participants prepared cakes and other treats inspired by their thesis topics.
Alysha Jones (pictured bottom row, middle) took top spot with a layered cake representing the levels of sediment found in Lake George.
Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian P. Schmidt, helped judge the tasty treats and spoke to ABC Radio Canberra about the importance of bringing students together for some light-hearted fun after a challenging two years.

A window to our past
|
Professor Brian P. Schmidt (pictured, left) arrived at ANU from the USA as a postdoctoral fellow in 1995, where he spent his first twenty years working at the Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring observatories.
Interestingly, he had been rejected for the position three times before receiving the offer that ultimately lead him to conduct the research that won him the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics.
In 2016, Brian became ANU Vice-Chancellor.
