Last week, Indigenous high school students travelled from all over Australia to the ANU campus on Ngambri and Ngunnawal lands to attend the National Indigenous Engineering Autumn School. Co-hosted by the ANU Tjabal Centre and the ANU Bandalang Studio, the Autumn School opened with a yarn with Mikaela Jade, Indigenous engineer and CEO of Indigital, whose storytelling wove understanding and navigating power structures and insights into the depth of Indigenous knowledge systems and why they’re so important to all of us in. Students also had the opportunity to learn about Engineering at ANU, taught from a systems engineering approach. They went to Mt Stromolo Observatory for star gazing, explored water filtration systems with Engineers Without Borders Australia and toured the photovoltaic lab learning about the science and engineering behind solar energy technology. Students also spent time with the ANU Solar Racing team and learning about how they are building their solar cars to race in the biennial Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. A huge thank you to everyone involved and in particular to the amazing team at the Tjabal Centre for ensuring the students were comfortable during their stay on the Ngunnawal and Ngambri ANU campus. We look forward to the next one! Read more: https://bit.ly/3xCtspt

We are thrilled to announce that The Australian National University has been awarded $8.4 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). This funding is a testament to our commitment to pioneering research that contributes to building clean industries and propelling Australia towards its renewable energy goals.Massive congratulations to Siva Karuturi, Xiaolin Wang, John Pye and Valeska Ting from the ANU College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics and to all the larger teams involved. This remarkable achievement highlights the exceptional research expertise and innovation within our ANU community. We would also like to extend our gratitude to ARENA for their support and investment in early-stage research and development. A massive kudos again to everyone involved!

Earlier this year, a group of ANU students attended HEX International Singapore, a two-week immersive program for idea-stage founders to build on their start-up ideas and learn from leaders in business, social impact and innovation. Among the attendees were CECC students and young entrepreneurs, Caitlyn Lewis and Oliver Bagin, each with their innovative products. BARDAR, an app by founders Oliver and Dexter offers real-time venue insights to ensure an unforgettable night out, while Caitlyn's Plantify boosts plant growth with magnetisation. Their attendance was made possible by the generous support of Loong Wang, entrepreneur and former ANU School of Computing student. Growing up on a farm, Nikki Ballinger’s interest in engineering began at an early age while helping her dad out fixing machinery and learning how to weld and do woodwork. Caitlyn Lewis always loved problem-solving and creativity – so engineering seemed like a no-brainer. Read our conversation with this year’s Natasha Linard Scholarship for Women in Engineering & Technology recipients, as they talk to us about engineering, their leadership journeys, and the barriers young women face. The scholarship supports the best and brightest female engineering and computer science students to develop the leadership skills needed to become future industry and community leaders. Team FireApp was named one of the two winners of the McCusker Prize in Humanitarian Engineering for their AI-driven app. The app enables rapid deployment of resources during the early stages of bushfires, when intervention has the highest chance of success. The initiative was prompted by the catastrophic Australian Black Summer bushfires during 2019 and 2020. Members of the FireApp team launched a start-up called Emergiq – to help them continue their work and possibly expand to other natural disasters. Each year the McCusker prize recognises undergraduate students that are striving to create social impact through their Humanitarian Engineering innovations. It’s the coldest of cold cases, an interstellar murder mystery. New research featured on the cover of Nature this week tackles the mind-bending astrophysics behind the Netflix sci-fi saga 'Three-Body Problem'. The researchers studied twin stars that should, in theory, have an identical chemical composition. Instead they found that 1 in 12 of these 'twins' showed different chemical makeups, suggesting that one of the stars had eaten a nearby planet. Want to learn more? Read about it here. https://bit.ly/43K5Knf Dr Yuan-Sen, Associate Professor at the Australian National University (ANU), jointly appointed to the School of Computing and School of Physics and Astronomy, has been working with Dr David Yong (also ANU), Dr Fan Liu (Monash University) and a team of researchers from around the world as part of Astro3D. #ThreeBodyProblem #NetflixSciFiMystery #Stars #Astrophysics #Computing #OurANU #ANUCECC The Australian National University
