The most recent cohort of over 180 Game Development students from the ANU School of Computing developed 44 different video games ranging from wizards exploring dungeons, pink rabbits fighting evil, to platform-hopping astronauts. Ideated, designed and developed as part of the Game Development course, the ANU students creations were inspired by classic arcade, video and board games. Associate Professor Penny Sweetser Kyburz is bringing a unique flair of creativity and innovation to her course. Dr Penny's favourite class is an early physical prototyping session, where she brings in craft supplies and playdough for the students to make prototypes of their game ideas. As we're celebrating our #CECC Women - we are excited to share that Engineering students Nikki Ballinger and Caitlyn Lewis are the recipients of the ANU College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics Natasha Linard Scholarship for Women and Technology for 2024. When reflecting on the vision of the scholarship, Nikki said, "I think it's important to honour leaders like Natasha Linard. She would have had to go through a lot more to graduate than I ever will. We should honour that change and keep up the tradition of how women help each other and help inspire others." The scholarship was created in memory of Dr Natasha Linard, one of the first women to graduate with an ANU Bachelor of Engineering and subsequently completed an ANU PhD in Engineering. #InternationalWomensDay #WomenInSTEM #IWD #OurANU #Engineering #InspireInclusion The Australian National University (ANU)

A team of CECC scholars have identified 37 mine sites in Australia that can be repurposed into renewable energy storage facilities. Pumped hydro energy storage encompasses the majority of global energy storage for the electricity industry. Their study identified mining pits, pit lakes, and tailings ponds within mining sites and located nearby reservoirs that could form a suitable pair. Their research is crucial as the world prepares for a renewable future, underscoring the urgency of embracing renewable solutions to combat climate change. Meet Professor Lachlan Blackhall, The Australian National University’s (ANU) newly appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation (DVCRI). Professor Lachlan Blackhall previously founded and led the University’s Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program (BSGIP). While doing his PhD in Engineering at ANU in 2008, he co-founded an entrepreneurship education program InnovationACT. After which, he went on to build Covate, a Canberra-based innovation incubator and accelerator. With over 15 years of experience as a researcher and his considerable expertise in entrepreneurship, he brings a unique perspective to the role. “I love what engineering stands for, which is about understanding the world, and then using that understanding to build what we need,” he says. “It’s the notion that you can influence the future to be better than it is today.” Read more: https://bit.ly/3IhblaA

The 2024 Robotic Vision Summer School (RVSS) extended over six days in February at the ANU Kioloa Campus. Participants engaged in lectures, deep-dive technical guest talks, social activities and interacted with eminent researchers in the robotics vision industry. They also delved into interactive workshops like a mini self-driving cars competition! The Pixel Pioneer team, including Jingyang You, Hao Lu, and Kai XI, placed in the top 3 of the competition with their impressively swift robot. Jingyang says, “One of my great ambitions is to naturally fuse computer vision and robotics. There is existing gaps, but RVSS clearly moves towards the direction of filling them.” Special shoutout to Yuxin Cao and her team for engineering the only penalty-free robot. #OurANU #RoboticVision #Robotics #Computing #ANUCECC
