VC's Update - ANU Grand Challenges Scheme

7 July 2017

Hello everyone

One of the reasons ANU stands apart from other universities is our ability to look beyond the day to day and address some of the biggest problems facing the world.

As you may be aware, applications for the first stage of the ANU Grand Challenges Scheme are now open.

The Grand Challenge Scheme is a new ANU program that calls on researchers to identify a problem or challenge that research can address. What's unique about the program is the way it seeks to bring people together from all across the University to bring new perspectives to a major challenge confronting society.

Some of the most exciting research opportunities, addressing the most pressing challenges facing our world, lie in collaboration between disciplines.

This is the first time the University has ever done anything like this. You'll find the application process is different from writing a standard grant application and that's because we want to encourage people to be creative in their thinking.

The first stage of the program is a call for a short, sharp three minute video where applicants will describe their 'Grand Challenge' and why it is important. Videos should be designed so they grab your attention and get people talking.

I'm looking forward to seeing the video submissions - which I stress don't form part of the assessment, so no thousand dollar productions please. We've taken your feedback on board and updated the guidelines so this is clear. You can find more information about the Grand Challenges Scheme here.

Have a great weekend,

Brian

PS - If you haven't already make sure you try out the ANU Pop-Up Village. New stores have opened already and we'll be having the official launch next week.
