New $53m student residence

The opportunity to live on campus is a valued aspect of the ANU student experience.

The Australian National University has unveiled plans for a new $53 million student residential building to house an extra 500 students on campus from 2017.

ANU students had a significant influence on the design of the new building, with their input incorporated into room design, facilities, technology and senior resident ratios.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Young AO said the new building will allow more students to fully participate in the on campus residential experience.

"The opportunity to live on campus is a valued aspect of the ANU student experience," Professor Young said.

"Being able to live on this beautiful campus attracts students to ANU and differentiates ANU from other universities."

Around 5,000 students currently live in student accommodation in ANU college residences and demand for extra affordable student accommodation remains strong.

Professor Young said the new building, to be built on the corners of Clunies Ross Street, Dickson Road and Daley Road, would help revitalise an under-used section of the campus.

It will have a striking design and incorporate up to date sustainable elements.

"With its stunning design this building will provide a bold and bright entrance to ANU along Clunies Ross Street," he said.

In recent years, almost all new student accommodation built in Australia has been in the form of self-contained apartments. Following student input, it was clear there was a strong desire for accommodation in the form of a traditional residential hall.

The new residence will feature self-catered accommodation with multiple self-service kitchens in the main hall, providing a social atmosphere for students as they prepare meals.

Students have also ensured the new building will include shared spaces for socialising on each level.

Accommodation in the new residential hall will be managed by UniLodge, but be structured as a traditional hall of residence with high levels of academic and social support for students.

It will be among the most affordable student accommodation in Canberra.
