Council News – Meetings: February and March 2019

Council Planning Day (14-15 February 2019)

Council assembled in Melbourne for its annual strategic planning meeting. This year, Council considered: Year 2 of the ANU Strategic Plan, Advancement (campaigns), Federal Election 2019, strategic positioning and engagement regionally and globally (including with China), and the Campus Master Plan. Outcomes from the meeting were included in the Council's forward agenda for further consideration.     

Council Membership

On 14 February, Council was pleased to welcome Professor Kate Reynolds from the Research School of Psychology, ANU College of Health and Medicine, to her first meeting. Professor Reynolds was elected to Council on 30 January 2019 as an Academic Staff representative.

Chancellorship

The Pro-Chancellor is leading a process to search for, and appoint, a Chancellor to succeed Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC, on 1 January 2020. 

Vice-Chancellor's Report

The Vice-Chancellor provided a detailed report about Executive Matters (including the search for the University's next Chief Operating officer), the Federal Election, ARC Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) results and the commencement of teaching in Kambri.

Annual Financial Statements 2018

Council considered and approved the 2018 Annual Financial Statements for the University, and noted the University's strong overall position. These will be contained in the University's 2018 Annual Report, also approved by Council on 29 March 2019. 

Philanthropic Presentation - Centre for Personalised Immunology

Professor Carola Vinuesa delivered a presentation about pathophysiological pathways in patients presenting with immunological disease, such as lupus, in order to make diagnoses more accurate, and treatment more effective. These presentations are an opportunity for researchers and Council to consider philanthropic opportunities associated with each project.

Other matters

Council approved committee memberships, and noted a range of periodic reports on matters ranging from the Academic Plan and student enrolments to summaries of Council Committee and Academic Board activities, and the ANU 75th anniversary project.
