The Pro-Chancellor continues to lead a process to search for, and appoint, a Chancellor to succeed Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC, on 1 January 2020, and provided an update about this.
The Vice-Chancellor provided a detailed report about Executive Matters (including the next stages of recruitment to appoint the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Chief Operating Officer and Pro Vice-Chancellor (University Experience). Council also discussed Capital Projects, the Federal Election, ARC Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) results and the French Review into Freedom of Speech at universities.
Financial Projections 2019
Council received an update about the University's budget situation, noting that the Annual Financial Statements for 2018 were approved at the previous meeting, on 29 March.
Philanthropic Presentation - Mayi Kuwayu Study
Associate Professor Ray Lovett delivered a presentation about the need for support for CAEPR's Mayi Kuwayu Study, designed to document the previously under-researched and under-appreciated impact of Indigenous culture as a missing ingredient in the design of health and wellbeing programs.
University Experience - Strategic Presentation
The Provost and the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) delivered a presentation about the University Experience portfolio, and especially the University's commitment to IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access).
Council also considered a significant range of topics, including: a review of Academic Governance, risk management, the draft ANU Bill, CECS Reimagine (update), the Reconciliation Action Plan, the University's Digital Strategy and summaries of Council Committee and Academic Board activity since March.
Reconciliation Week Lecture
Following the Council meeting, members attended the 2019 ANU Reconciliation Week Lecture, at Kambri. The keynote address was delivered by Professor Tony Dreise, the recently appointed Director of the ANU Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research.
