ANU student meets singing astronaut

ANU student Siobhan Tobin has met one of her heroes, astronaut Chris Hadfield, during his whirlwind visit to Canberra.

Commander Hadfield shot to international fame when a video of him singing David Bowie’s Space Oddity from the International Space Station went viral on the Internet.

During his visit to ANU, Commander Hadfield visited Mount Stromlo and inspected ANU-led space engineering projects at the Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre.

“I heard he was coming to Canberra, so I bought a ticket to his show and I managed to get myself invited along to Mount Stromlo,” said Siobhan, a second year physics student from country Victoria.

“What was really cool was that the Australian astronaut Andy Thomas and Chris Hadfield were at astronaut school together.

“Chris Hadfield is a remarkable guy, with a great talent for explaining things about space.”

Siobhan said she hoped to study astrophysics after completing her undergraduate degree, and said meeting Commander Hadfield was a highlight of her time at ANU.

“When I came to ANU, I certainly wasn’t expecting to meet any astronauts. It was a pretty amazing experience.”
