The ANU Medical School Canberra Hospital Campus is opening its doors to the community, on Saturday 17 May, as part of the School’s 10th birthday celebrations.
Canberrans are invited to join medical school staff, students and volunteers for an informal, behind the scenes look at teaching facilities and activities that take place in the Medical School in Building 4 at Canberra Hospital.
“The open day is an opportunity for people to see where clinical skills are taught,” says Suzanne McKenzie, Manager of ANU Medical School Canberra Hospital Campus.
“Clinical skills teaching is a significant component of a medical teaching curriculum, but what a lot of people don’t know is that this takes place at Canberra Hospital. We are opening our doors this Saturday to give people a chance to see where the School is on Canberra Hospital Campus, to have a look inside and to see a sample of what clinical skills teaching involves.”
ANU medical students study at the Canberra Hospital Campus one day per week in the first 2 years of the 4-year degree, and in the final years they spend more time in the hospital environment and with patients on the wards of Canberra’s teaching hospitals.
Ms McKenzie says the open day is a great way to mark the 10th birthday celebrations.
“We have come a long way since opening our doors in 2004. The campus started life in cramped quarters on Level 7 of the tower block in The Canberra Hospital. In 2005 the new building - Building 4 - was finished and the School moved into its purpose built accommodation. This was a significant change and has made delivering the program more effective and more comfortable for everyone,” she says.

A range of displays will be on show at the open day including simulation models and mannequins that are used in clinical training across all four years of the medical degree. Clinical skills teaching will be demonstrated and paediatricians will be on hand to demonstrate paediatric teaching.
Delivering the teaching program at the Medical School’s Canberra Hospital Campus involves many people including clinical skills lecturers, tutors, volunteer patients, nurse educators and real and simulated patients. Visitors to the open day will also be able to learn about how the Canberra community has supported the School since 2004 and, if interested, how they might become involved in the future.
