Technology developed at The Australian National University has joined the likes of Google and Twitter by being named 2018 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum.

QuintessenceLabs, an Australian cyber security company, was founded by Vikram Sharma after completing his PhD in quantum physics at ANU.

The company uses this research to strengthen data security by integrating advanced quantum technology with data protection solutions.

"This award shows ANU research is leading the world. The research was ahead of its time, helping to address some of today's most pressing issues relating to cybersecurity and data protection" ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt said.  

The World Economy Forum award the Technology Pioneer to a start-up, trailblazing company. These companies have the potential to significantly impact business and society through the design, development and implementation of new technologies and innovations.

Previous winners include Google, Twitter, AirBnB and Spotify.
