Sandra Jeyakumar is the Hilary Booth Scholarship 2020 recipient. Sandra moved to Canberra at the start of 2020 to pursue her Honours in Mathematics at MSI.
She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Queensland in Mathematics and Science (Physics).
Sandra is interested in how mathematics provides a natural and logical way to approach any problem by breaking it down to the most fundamental level.
"As someone who identifies as a problem solver, being exposed to higher-level mathematics at university was a revelation and prompted me onto my current path of pursuing it as a career," said Sandra.
Moving to a new city has been challenging for Sandra. She acknowledges that the support of friends and fellow researchers at MSI has helped ease the isolation of studying remotely.
"Our daily chats about mathematics, groceries, and everything in between has definitely helped me stay motivated and productive while being isolated at home."
Receiving the Hilary Booth Scholarship has supported Sandra to live independently in Canberra.
"My family lives overseas, so I am incredibly grateful to the donors for supporting this scholarship. I feel honoured to be the 2020 recipient," said Sandra.
In the future, Sandra hopes to move overseas to continue postgraduate studies in mathematics and focus on quantitative finance. She is particularly interested in the intersection between high-level maths, computer science and finance.
