To promote excellence in education and research at the Australian National University (ANU) including the exchange of knowledge, faculty and students between Australia and North America.
The Foundation was established in 2014 as a non-profit, tax exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code.
The ANU was founded in 1946 by the Australian Government as a world leading, truly national university. It is an international leader in research on issues of global significance and is consistently ranked among the world's finest universities for its teaching excellence. As a world-leading research-intensive university, ANU partners with similarly focused institutions, including Yale, UC Berkeley, Oxford and Cambridge. Many ANU Alumni go on to become leaders in government, industry, research and academia.
The ANU Foundation USA has been formed to support the advancement of knowledge and learning at the ANU and the exchange of academic knowledge, faculty and students between universities in the US and the ANU. The Foundation receives contributions and, at the discretion of the Foundation's Board, allocates funds to any organisation organised and operated exclusively for charitable, educational or scientific purposes as provided in the Internal Revenue Code, and organisations that conduct or engage in all lawful activities that are in furtherance of the purposes of the Foundation.
The Foundation funds a range of activities at the ANU. One of the primary goals of the Foundation will be to support knowledge exchange between the US and Australia - particularly supporting undergraduate students and early to mid-career researchers.
Donations to the Foundation are deductible charitable contributions by donors for income tax purposes under 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code.
Types of projects
Scholarships are designed to attract, support and reward the most talented and dedicated students - regardless of their background. Scholarships give students freedom and confidence to concentrate on their studies and help them realize their full potential. Donors are able to choose to donate to existing scholarship programs, or can establish a new scholarship in an area of particular interest, to support a particular cause or to encourage greater focus on a particular area of study.
Donors to the Foundation may choose to direct a donation to support a specific research project or research discipline of their choice. The Foundation will consult with the university to ensure the donation is directed to a research area of importance that will benefit from the donation.
The Foundation will seek donations to support initiatives that meet the costs of travel between Australia and the US. Donors may choose to support a number of intern programs for ANU students to travel to the US to complete internships with Members of Congress or with policy think tanks in Washington DC. The Foundation will also seek funding to support the US Development and Mentoring Program, which provides grants-in-aid to high-potential early and mid-career researchers to gain targeted exposure to North American Funding sources and prospective partners. Other mentoring programs might be developed to connect ANU students and researchers with alumni in the US.
Student awards not only recognize excellence in scholarly effort, but provide financial assistance to those who demonstrate exceptional ability and aptitude. Donors may choose to donate to an existing award or establish a new award in a particular area of study or to reward a particular type of activity.
