In early August, two of the University's PhD scholars presented at the prestigious International Studies Association Asia-Pacific (ISA A-P) Conference in Tokyo. Paul Chamberlain, now at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre (SDSC), presented his research on navies in statecraft in East Asia, including Japan.

His officemate and fellow PhD scholar, Dongkeun Lee, who specializes in Sea Power in the Indo-Pacific, was supported by an ANU Vice-Chancellor travel grant. The conference was hosted by Waseda University and had a broad theme focusing on conflicts and tensions in the Asia-Pacific beyond historical hostilities.

Philanthropist Dr Andrew Forrest AO took time out from a global lecture tour to attend a roundtable on climate change at ANU last week.

At the meeting, hosted by the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy and Disaster Solutions and attended by almost 20 experts from across the campus, Dr Forrest, the non-executive chairman of Fortescue Metals, argued he is one of "not more than a thousand" individuals to whom the public should look for action.
