You turned out in your thousands. Last Saturday, students, staff, alumni and Canberra locals came together on campus to mark 80 years of ANU. Thank you for being part of a day that looked back on the legacy and celebrated the impact of ANU. Here is to the next 80 years, together.

- The University's core finance system, ES Financials, is being updated tonight. Systems including ES Financials and Finance Self Service will be unavailable from 7pm tonight, Thursday 20 August to 8am Monday 24 August.
- The reopening of University House last Friday featured an extract from the film of its 1954 opening. You can watch the full segment, including the Duke of Edinburgh’s speech, here.
- ANU is calling for written submissions to the review of the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health. Submissions will remain confidential and close on Friday 18 September. Find out more about our continuous school reviews and how you can take part.

Dr Gordon de Brouwer AO PSM FIPAA appointed 14th Chancellor of ANU
|
ANU has appointed Dr Gordon de Brouwer AO PSM FIPAA as its 14th Chancellor, following an extensive independent search.
An ANU alumnus, distinguished public sector leader and economist, Dr de Brouwer brings more than four decades of experience in public policy, governance, institutional leadership and reform to the role.

ANU Community Day brings 80 years of ideas, discovery and community to life
|
ANU opened its doors to Canberra on Saturday 15 August to celebrate 80 years of people, places and stories at ANU Community Day.
Held as part of our 80th anniversary celebrations, the free Community Day brought campus to life with live entertainment, exhibitions, talks, demonstrations, showcases, food trucks and activities for all ages. Take a look at some of the highlights.

The new University Office of Integrity website is now live, providing a clear central service to support staff, students and community members to raise complaints or concerns, find information, support or to lodge a report.
You don't need to know which policy or process applies, just tell us what you are concerned about and the Office of Integrity will help identify the next step.

A close shave for a great cause
|
Canberran local, Danii, has shaved her head on the lawns of University House, all for a good cause. Danii has for the Australian Brain Cancer Foundation, after her husband’s brain cancer diagnosis in 2021.
The funds will support the , helping researchers advance personalised treatments and test new therapies for brain cancer.

Concept Club: years of ten-minute arguments
|
Concept Club at the Coral Bell School gives speakers ten minutes to present one idea, big or small.
"The point is not to define the concept but to present an argument with, for or about it," says PhD candidate Benedict Moleta.
After two years of ten-minute talks on everything from regionalism and the state to gender justice and revolutions, the club now streams sessions internationally, drawing curious minds worldwide.

Ready to give your commute a new spin?

Cycle Smart is a six-week program helping ANU staff build the skills and confidence to cycle to work. Starting Monday 7 September, you can participate in guided rides, free practical workshops and bike support through a commitment of only 1-2 hours per week. This program is limited to 20 participants, so get in touch now.

ANU Sport powerlifting meet
|
Celebrate strength, community and personal bests at the ANU Sport Powerlifting Meet on Saturday 17 October. Qualified judges will assess your squat, bench press and deadlift, offering cues to help you improve your form. Every competitor receives a free T-shirt!

Scams Awareness Week runs from Monday 24 to Friday 28 August and is a chance for all of us to talk more openly about scams and how to stay safe.
This year’s theme, No one’s just a number, reminds us that behind every scam report is a real person – a parent, friend, neighbour or colleague – whose money, time or trust has been stolen.

Submit your work to Woroni’s ‘Blank’ issue
|
ANU newspaper Woroni is inviting submissions from the entire ANU community for ‘Blank’, an upcoming open-themed issue with no prescribed genre or discipline. You can submit essays, creative writing, visual art, comics, photography or hybrid work. Written pieces can range from a single line of poetry to 1,500 words. Submissions close Friday 4 September, with publication expected on Monday 21 September.

Joshua Black will join Andrew Leigh to discuss his new book, Performance Politics: Australian politicians and the stories they tell, an eye-opening look at how Australian politicians shape and reshape stories about their lives, ambitions and political careers.

|
Bird flu doesn’t just threaten birds and mammals – it could affect entire ecosystems, wrote Honorary Professor Penny Olsen, in The Conversation. For example, a sharp fall in insect-eating bird populations could result in large trees dying. “This is because eucalypts – particularly those already under stress – can gradually wither and die if birds don’t eat sap-sucking psyllids and leaf-eating weevils,” Professor Olsen, of the Research School of Biology, wrote.
On ABC TV’s Insiders, Professor Mark Kenny, of the Australian Studies Institute, discussed the week’s political news, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s efforts to build positive relationships with other world leaders. And Associate Professor Ben Phillips, of POLIS, told Nine News that blaming migrants for high house prices was “more a matter of political convenience than reality”.
Over the past week, ANU experts spoke to the media about a range of issues, including the discovery of a “black hole star”, a proposed Papua New Guinea liquid natural gas project, Australia’s plan to host a climate summit in Fiji and Tuvalu, superannuation policy, GST revenue, solar panel recycling, student activism, norovirus on cruise ships and the Languages in Australia survey.

"Working at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Mt Stromlo provides an incredible vantage point to see Canberra's weather come and go. It is a privilege to be located here on top of one of Canberra's peaks.
