University Academic Culture: Has It Gone Wrong?

What's happened to academic freedom at universities? Have universities become too corporatised? What's the point of universities anyway?

Kick start your second term by exploring these questions with the ANU Cultures Learning Community! Our panel of ANU researchers will stimulate thought and allow you to ask your questions about the culture of modern universities.

Panellists:

Professor Margaret Thornton
Margaret is an academic in the ANU College of Law. She's published 'Privatising the Public University: The Case of Law' which explores the impact of commercialisation on the teaching of law at universities.

Dr Kim Huynh
Kim is an academic in the School of Politics and International Relations, College of Arts and Social Sciences. He teaches a popular political philosophy course, the last module of which concerns 'The Truth about the University'. He's currently sitting on an article that likens the ideological and epistemological seizure of scholarly life to R2D2's conquest over the Millennium Falcon.

Ms Bianca Hennessy
Bianca is a PhD Candidate in the School of Culture, History and Languages, College of Asia and the Pacific. Her research involves studying her own research community: Pacific Studies. This involves creating a multi-sited and mixed-method ethnographic study of how an academic community enacts a decolonial, empowering mission in universities across Oceania.

Ms Tess Snowball
Tess is the current manager of the ANU's Academic Skills and Learning Centre and sits on the ANU's Academic Board. She is also a representative of the ACT Branches of the Association for Academic Language and Learning and the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia.

The event will begin with each speaker discussing an aspect of academic culture that interests them for five minutes. The floor will then be opened for audience questions.

Light refreshments will be provided at the conclusion of the event. This will cater for vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten free requirements.

This event is open to everyone.
