Understanding sorcery accusation related violence in Papua New Guinea

Presented by ANU College of Asia & the Pacific

Sorcery Accusation Related Violence (SARV) has been described as a wildfire spreading throughout Papua New Guinea. Whilst individual horrific attacks are sporadically reported in the news, geographically specific anthropological accounts are produced, and engaged research on civil society interventions is disseminated, there has been little broad-scale and quantitative study of the dynamics of SARV as a particular form of harm.

This seminar presents the high-level findings of a multi-year mixed methods study into SARV in PNG. It will outline its drivers and the opportunities for addressing it, in addition to placing what occurs in PNG into a global context.
