Regulating trade in a net-zero world

Countries with ambitious emissions reductions goals are increasingly eyeing trade-related climate policies to address leakage and competitiveness concerns. These policies include climate border adjustment mechanisms and certification schemes. In order to be compatible with trade rules, these policies will need to allow producers to prove the embedded emissions content of their exports.

This seminar will motivate and introduce trade-related climate policies, and the novel embedded emissions accounting frameworks that will be needed to support them. It will highlight the need to ensure this new area of regulation supports genuine emissions reductions in the least trade restrictive means possible.

About the Speaker

Emma Aisbett is a Fellow at the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) and Associate Director, Research for ANU Grand Challenge - Zero-Carbon Energy for the Asia Pacific. Emma has been researching economic regulation and governance at the nexus of globalization, environment and development for over 20 years. In the Grand Challenge she is helping lead a transdisciplinary team focussed on understanding how Australia can seize the opportunity provided by its bountiful renewable energy resources to evolve and grow its exports while providing global environmental benefits.
