Book Launch — Zhang Peili: From Painting to Video

Presented by ANU College of Asia & the Pacific

The launch of Zhang Peili: From Painting to Video (edited by Dr Olivier Krischer) features a launch address by Dr Caroline Turner, Adjunct Senior Research Fellow, ANU Research School of Humanities and the Arts.

In 2014, New York-based artist Lois Conner gifted one of pioneering Chinese artist Zhang Peili’s last paintings to the ANU's newly opened Australian Centre on China in the World (CIW). Never exhibited and thought lost, the reemergence of Flying Machine (1994) prompts an exploration of the relation between painting and video in the oeuvre of Zhang Peili. While studying broader developments in the history of Chinese contemporary art, the book also embraces longstanding connections as integral to its meaning: connections between artists, curators and researchers, collaborators, colleagues and friends through China and Australia.

Dr Olivier Krischer is Deputy Director of the China Studies Centre, The University of Sydney. He is an art historian whose research focuses on Sino-Japanese art relations and artistic activism in Hong Kong and East Asia. Olivier has previously been a Visiting Fellow in the Institute for Modern History, at Academia Sinica, Taiwan, and a post-doctoral fellow at CIW. He curated “Zhang Peili: From Painting to Video” (co-curated with Kim Machan, Media Art Asia Pacific) and edited Zhang Peili: From Painting to Video (ANU Press, 2019).

Dr Caroline Turner is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the Research School of Humanities and the Arts, ANU. She was Deputy Director of the Humanities Research Centre ANU (2000-2006). Prior to joining the ANU, Caroline was Deputy Director of the Queensland Art Gallery (1982-1999) and played a key role in the Gallery's international programmes, including as co-founder and Project Director for the Asia-Pacific Triennial (1993, 1996 and 1999).
