ANU Careers - Career Journey of ANU First Nation Students

In celebration of NAIDOC Week, we have brought together a panel of ANU First Nation Peoples to share their career journey post graduation. Our panel members will talk about the challenges they faced and how they navigated the transition from uni student to a professional in the world of work. They will talk about who they turned to when things got tough and the services they accessed to help them. They will share their tips and tricks on what helped them be successful.

Panel Members:

Stephanie Pollard - Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (2020)

Stephanie Pollard is a Ngemba woman whose great-grandmother was part of the stolen generation. Only in recent years has Stephanie and her family been able to start to put the pieces of their history back together. Stephanie grew up in Queanbeyan but spent a lot of time with extended family in Goulburn, which is where her love for rural living and communities started. This love of the rural life, her Indigenous heritage and evolving interest in science lead her to study a Bachelor of Science as an undergraduate and then Medicine as a postgraduate, at ANU and has recently commenced her career in medicine at Orange Hospital.

Benjamin Millar  - Bachelor  of Advanced Computing (Honours) (2021)

Ben a proud Wulli Wulli man and descendant of Jackanapes, and his people's traditional land is just inland from Rockhampton, Queensland.  Ben graduated from ANU in 2020 with an Honours in Advanced Computing (specialising in Systems and Architecture). During his time at uni he was head tutor for the COMP2420 course, completed an internship at Google, and had involvement in several start-ups including founding the RPA solutions provider Kuaba. Ben now works as a Cyber Security engineer at the Australian based Atlassian.

Frank Gafa - Bachelor of Arts (2015)

Frank Gafa (he/him) is a Queer, Wailwan and Wiradjuri man, community organiser and advocate, and is currently Chairing the ANU Indigenous Alumni Network. His day job is as an Organiser for the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU). Frank has been associated with the ANU since 2008, first as a student (BA '15) and then as a staff member at the National Centre for Indigenous Studies (NCIS) and in HR across the University. While at ANU he also held the roles of ANUSA Indigneous Officer and NTEU Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representative.

Hmalan Hunter Xenie - Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) - 2020

Hmalan is of Tiwi/Iwaidja and Kaytej/Warlpiri descent (Northern Territory, Australia) and Drehu descent (Lifou Island, New Caledonia). She is an Environmental Scientist. She currently works at Power and Water Corporation based in Darwin. She is a casual tutor for Indigenous undergrads studying Aboriginal Studies, French and Science at ANU and Charles Darwin University (CDU). Hmalan is a member of ANU's Indigenous Alumni Network and ANU's Institute for Water Futures Indigenous Scholars Program. Hmalan continues her involvement with the Aboriginal Research Practitioners' Network, based at CDU, whenever possible. She is deeply interested in supporting Indigenous livelihoods on-Country through environmental initiatives.
