Take a breath, take a break

Take a breath, take a break...

2020 has been a particularly challenging year and has taken its toll on all of us in different ways. Trying to maintain our wellbeing and support our family and friends to do the same during this time has been another challenge we have all had to navigate.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has evolved, it has been difficult to plan the type of breaks or holidays we've been used to in the past to 'get away from it all' and many of us will have arrived in August without having taken a proper break away from work this year.

As we have passed the mid-way point of the year, it's a good time to think about how to sustain our energy and wellbeing for the coming months.

This means it could have been many months since you have had more than a couple of days over a weekend to try and rest and recharge.  Perhaps you have noticed yourself or others being less able to weather any additional challenges that come our way at work or at home.  Perhaps you are feeling more tired than usual or struggling to feel motivated...even though you are very busy!  With that in mind, perhaps it's time to think about and plan to take a break.

While there is much to do as the University continues to adapt and adjust to teaching and research during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is really important for all staff to take a break and plan annual or long service leave (or both) to rest, refresh and recuperate.

While we often plan our leave in blocks of time, that is not the only way we can plan and take our breaks. A week, a few days in a row, the occasional long weekend or adding some days to a forthcoming long weekend or taking a day or two of leave once a week or fortnight or month over an extended period are all options.  Both mini-breaks and longer breaks can make a big difference to each of us and how we manage our wellbeing

For anyone wondering what options they may have for what to do if they planned some annual or long service leave while travel remains restricted, there is lots of information available on how you could enjoy a ‘staycation’ in Canberra and our local region. Use the time to explore some new places or activities here at home. For the latest information about travel restrictions and staying COVID-safe, visit the ACT Government COVID-19 website

If you want up-to-date information about what’s open in and around the ACT so you can plan your leave, check out visitcanberra.com.au  Please note: some activities may need to be pre-booked due to COVID-19 restrictions.

If taking leave seems impossible at the moment, please talk to your manager about how you could plan a break in the coming weeks and months– even just a few days.  There will be a way that you can have an opportunity to rest and recharge while supporting and continuing to meet yours and your team’s obligations and commitments.
