Using the Check In CBR app and QR codes at ANU

We've partnered with the ACT Government to implement their new contact tracing system on our campus. Check In CBR replaces the need for manual registers or diaries and if we need to do contact tracing, it will be easier and more efficient. 

Checking in via the app on campus is strongly encouraged but not mandatory. Event organisers should still consider pre-registration or ticketing for major events.

Essential information

  • When users download the app, they are asked to input the following personal information: first and last name, mobile number and email address. You only need to do this once, but you can change this information if you need to via the app. 
  • When you go into a café, restaurant or building, you can check in by scanning the QR code or entering the venue code into the app.  
  • Data of where you have been is stored on the app for your use and is also held in a secure ACT Health server for 28 days, after which it is deleted. 
  • No-one can access this data except ACT Health, who will only access it for contact tracing purposes. 
  • ANU does not access this information. 
  • ANU has done its own Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) and cybersecurity assessment and is satisfied with these aspects. 

How to download the app

Internet connection and a compatible phone or tablet device are required. 

  1. Download the Check In CBR app from Google Play Store or the Apple App Store
  2. Register your details (required for the first time only). 
  3. At participating venues, open the app, select ‘Check in Now’ and hover your smartphone over the displayed QR code. 
  4. Add in any additional people – those who are with you without their own device or app. 
  5. When the check-in is complete, show venue staff the app successful check in screen.

Exposure location alerts

Exposure location alerts are now available for Check in CBR app users.

If one of your check-ins matches the date and time of an exposure location, you will be notified via SMS or push notification, a message on the home screen and there will be coloured identifiers in your check in history page.

These alerts are in place to let you know if you are identified as a close or casual contact so you can take appropriate action to quarantine and get a COVID test or monitor for symptoms if you need to.

Make sure you update your app to ensure you have access to this important feature.

Check In CBR card

In addition, a Check In CBR card is now available. This is designed for those people who do not own a smartphone or who are unable to download and use the Check In CBR app. This free card contains a unique QR code which can be scanned at the majority of businesses and venues across the ACT. This will make checking in a quick and private process for card holders. Note that the Check In CBR card cannot be used at those locations where there is no-one to assist with scanning of the card (for example on public transport).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Should I have any privacy concerns in using the Check In CBR app?

The information you provide on the Check-in CBR app is only for the purposes of contact tracing confirmed cases of COVID-19, or other uses authorised by law. Please be aware that the information provided in the Check-in CBR app is collected by ACT Health and is held in a secure ACT Health server for 28 days, after which it is deleted.

The information you provide on the Check-in CBR app will be managed in accordance with the ACT Health Privacy Policy. You may access or to update your personal information held by ACT Health by making a formal request in writing to ACT Health, GPO Box 825, Canberra ACT 2601.

The Check-in CBR app is a product of the ACT Government and ANU does not manage the security of the app or have access to any data from the app.

ANU has published the Privacy Impact Assessment of the Check-in CBR app and implemented its recommendations to mitigate the identified privacy impacts.

The Check-in CBR app is the preferred method for contact tracing. If locations on campus are using an alternative contact tracing to the Check-in CBR app, please contact the Senior Privacy Officer for support to complete a PIA.

Where is my data stored and how long is it stored for? 

Information collected in the app goes directly to ACT Health and is stored for 28 days to assist with contact tracing (if required).

ANU does not have access to this information. 

Do I have to use the Check In CBR app to scan a Check In CBR QR code? 

Yes. For security purposes the QR code functionality was built within an app. QR codes on Check In CBR posters will only work when using the app, they will not work by opening your camera to scan. 

Once you have downloaded the app, it’s only a couple of steps to check-in at venues.

Should I still use the Australian Government’s COVIDSafe App? 

Yes. The Check In CBR app compliments the COVIDSafe app 

The Check In CBR app is specific for customers to check in to a specific venue and have their details stored directly with ACT Health for contact tracing (if required). The COVID Safe app has a broader use and is not venue based. It is for use in other locations such as open spaces, parks and public transport. 

What if I don’t want to use the app, or my phone is not compatible with the app? 

If you aren’t using the Check In CBR app to check in to buildings and venues on campus, you are required to keep a written record or diary of your movements and interactions with others on campus to support contract tracing. This includes: 

  • your arrival time at a facility 
  • the rooms you use for research activities, work or study 
  • any other rooms used 
  • the people you interacted with; and 
  • the time you depart from a room or building 

Do I need to check in every time I change floors within the same building? 

Each floor within a building has its own QR code. You need to check in to each floor that you attend. 

It only takes a couple of seconds to scan new QR codes after setting up the app for the first time. Every QR code you scan will make contact tracing easier for the ACT Health authorities! 


My office or lecture theatre is on level two of a building. If I go up to level three for another meeting or lecture, and then down to level one to hang out, I will check in to both of those levels as well. 

I work on campus. Do I need to check in to my office each day? 

It is best practice to check in to your building and floor every day that you are working from campus. This is especially important if you are not on campus every day (for example, working a couple of days a week from home) so that there is a clear record of when you were on campus.  


I work on level two of a building and come in to work on campus three days each week. I will check in to level two each day, because I don't work here every day. 

Do I need to checkout? 

No, you don’t need to ‘check out’ of venues. 

For students living on campus: Should I check into my residential hall or college? 

You don't need to check in at your place of residence. 

If you live on campus, you should check in to all other venues that you visit on campus. For example, libraries and teaching venues. 

Visitors of students living on campus should check in to all venues they visit, including residential halls and colleges.

Are visitors required to check in to venues on campus? 

Yes, visitors should check in to all venues they visit on campus, including residential halls and colleges.
