Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Young AO announced the appointment of Professor Peter Kanowski as Master of University House.
Peter is Professor of Forestry at ANU, in the Fenner School of Environment and Society; he has occupied that Chair since 1995, following a lectureship at the University of Oxford. For the past two years, he has been on leave from his ANU position as a Deputy Director General at the Center for International Forestry Research, based in Bogor, Indonesia.
Peter is a BSc (Forestry) Honours graduate of the ANU, where he was Schlich Medallist, and a DPhil graduate of the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He benefited from collegiate life at both universities, and was a Fellow of Wolfson College Oxford for seven years prior to his return to ANU.
He was Head of the Department of Forestry and the School of Resources Environment and Society for 12 years, prior to the establishment of the Fenner School. Peter has supervised more than 50 PhD students and a comparable number of Masters’ by coursework and research, and taught courses and convened programs from first-year to graduate level.
Peter’s academic work has focused primarily on aspects of forest governance and practice, in Australia and internationally, including through partnership research in the Asia-Pacific region. He has been closely engaged in many state and national forest-related policy processes, including as a Panellist in the 2003-4 COAG National Bushfire Inquiry and as a member of the 2011 Australia State of Environment Committee.
Peter has served the Canberra community in a number of roles, including through the Board of the National Arboretum Canberra, and received a Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Community Outreach in 2011.
It is expected that Professor Kanowski will commence his new role in late May 2014.
