In early February, 19 dedicated alumni volunteers hit the phones to dispense their wisdom to newbie students.
The Student Welcome Calling Program run by the Alumni Relations team is now in its second year. The program aims to ease the transition of new students to University life, with alumni sharing their personal experiences and tips over the phone.
During the two-week calling period, alumni made almost 900 calls, with most students asking about life on campus, what it’s like to study at ANU and life in Canberra more generally.
Alumni caller Nishadee Perera says that she enjoyed hearing how excited many of the students were.
“A number of students had very thoughtful questions and it was great to help in some small way,” said Nishadee.
Grant Robertson also enjoyed volunteering in the call room and the opportunity to share some of his great memories from the College of Engineering and Computer Science.
“It feels good after all the help and good ideas that I received throughout my time at ANU to be able to pass it on.”
