Professor Richard Baker

The Pro Vice-Chancellor (University Experience) provides leadership of strategic initiatives that promote student and staff equity, Indigenous Reconciliation and improve the quality of the student experience.

The portfolio's key roles are:

  • Provide leadership of the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) project.
  • Promote Indigenous Reconciliation, including leading initiatives to increase Indigenous student and staff numbers.
  • Enhance the quality of the student experience by providing senior leadership of student services and the student residences.
  • Ensure high-quality student access and equity policies and procedures, including effective interaction with Student Associations and student representatives.
  • Monitor best practice developments in the Australian Learning and Teaching Council. 
  • As Head of Tuckwell House, enhance the Tuckwell Scholars' experience

Professor Richard Baker commenced as the Pro Vice-Chancellor (University Experience) at ANU in April 2013.

Prior to taking up this Professor Richard Baker had a long history of educational leadership at ANU. Trained in the fields of geography and archaeology at ANU and the University of Adelaide, he has also worked at the Northern Territory Museum and the National Museum of Australia. His research has focussed on issues related to Indigenous Land management and how to effectively link teaching and research.

Professor Richard Baker is a passionate teacher whose teaching at ANU has bridged geography, sustainability, environmental policy, Indigenous studies and leadership and influence. He was the driving force behind the establishment of the University's Vice-Chancellor's courses.

Professor Richard Baker teaching awards include:

  • Team leader of the winning course in Australian Awards for University Teaching - institutional category 'Large, first year classes' category (2003)
  • Carrick Award for Australian University Teaching (2006)
  • Carrick Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (2007)
