Dear Members,

I am very pleased to advise that we have appointed a new General Manager. Mr Walter Sauer commenced with us on Monday 16th June having previously been General Manager at the Bega Country Club and RSL. Originally from Austria, Walter has had extensive experience in the hotel and club sectors in Australia and overseas. More details on his background will be found in a special segment inside these News and Notes.
The Cellar Bar project is progressing well with much of the heavy work due to be finished in the next few weeks. Those of you who have visited recently will have seen the start of the landscaping for the transition from the new Cellar Bar to the Fellows Garden. The project is currently running a few weeks behind; we are currently expecting completion towards the end of October, although there is the possibility that some of the lost time might be made up. Former Manager Peter Forrest dropped in recently and we were able to put him in touch with the Project Manager, who was enormously grateful for the inside knowledge Peter was able to provide on the nature of the earlier construction, the location of (unmapped) buried pipes and other aspects not known to any of us who are relative new-comers to University House.
Since the last News and Notes we have signed up two new casual members of staff!. Tamara Orsi and Gretel Schweiger have signed on to help at special functions. We gave them a much-deserved formal farewell after their almost 50 years service between them on Friday 20th June, and then welcomed them back as casuals! Those of you who contacted us to say how much they would be missed will now, hopefully, still see them in and about functions.
About six years ago you may recall that Graduate House was added to the community of University House; since then many students from Graduate House join us for Wednesday evening dinner. This year we have been looking at means by which the operations can be more consolidated. From later this year the Graduate House Advisory Committee – which is a student-management liaison committee – will assume responsibility for the interests of University House students as well, and the Board of Fellows will add to its role advising me on matters to do with Graduate House in the same way it does for University House.
Finally, Glenda and I will be away for July and August. After a conference in Boston we will be spending seven weeks at the University of Cambridge. I will be working in the Department of Engineering as part of my current sabbatical leave, and have a Visiting Fellowship at Wolfson College. During this period, Professor Kiaran Kirk, Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BaMBi), and Member of the Board of Fellows, will be acting Master. En route we will spend a couple of nights at the Yale Club of New York City with which, as I advised earlier, we have established reciprocal relations on behalf of Members of University House.
