ANU Centre for UNESCO

Appointment as A UNESCO Visiting Fellow

Visiting Fellows are appointed by the University in an honorary capacity from categories such as the following:

  • academics on outside studies leave
  • graduate or post-doctoral students researching topics within UNESCO's interest and sphere of competence
  • retired academics with interests in the work of UNESCO
  • individuals who have, or have had, strong working links with UNESCO - e.g. former National Commission members or members of the UNESCO secretariat
  • present or former members of staff of UNESCO with expertise in one or more of UNESCO's fields of competence.

Visiting Fellows may be appointed for varying periods - up to 2 years (in the first instance) or for shorter periods of, for example, one, three, or six months depending upon the availability of the Visiting Fellow and of office space at the Centre. Such appointments may be full-time, part-time or periodic. In some cases the Centre may be able to make a contribution towards the travel and/or accommodation costs of Visiting Fellows.

In order to emphasise the interdisciplinary nature of the Centre's work, the Centre welcomes Visiting Fellows who collectively can cover the areas of UNESCO's competence - education, culture, communication, social science and culture.

From time to time the Centre may also appoint appropriately qualified people as Centre Visitors. Examples include graduates working on UNESCO projects and candidates for higher degrees whose research is in a field of interest to UNESCO. While the Centre is not usually able to provide facilities for Centre Visitors it would look to arranging seminars and other activities of mutual interest.
