Burgmann College Postgraduate Village

The Postgraduate Village at Burgmann College was completed in 2004 and features some of the most modern and comfortable accommodation on campus. It accommodates 120 self-catered places for postgraduate and Honours students in a village street setting. It blends the best of collegiate values in a contemporary way and is located in a splendid bush and parkland setting on campus. Considerable resources are devoted to providing appropriate academic assistance, pastoral care and leadership opportunities for residents.

Facilities

Room inclusions

The Post Graduate Village consists of single room studios, and apartments with two, three or five bedrooms that share bathroom and kitchen facilities. Individual rooms are private with swipe card access. All rooms are supplied with a bed, study desk, cupboards, heater, phone, and TV/internet ports.

Cost

The weekly fee depends on whether you live in a studio, two, three, or five bedroom apartment. The fees are direct debited in advance and you must stay four weeks. There is also an up front fee that covers bond, membership of the residents association, and infrastructure fees.

Catering

The Post Graduate Village is self catered, with the option of adding a catering package. Each apartment has a common area with lounge chairs, table, stove or microwave and fridge. All other appliances need to be provided by the resident. The residents in all apartments are expected to keep their common area, including kitchen, clean. Self-catered residents are entitled and encouraged to attend a weekly dinner in Burgmann's dining hall. Your fees also cover a number of formal dining events through the year, including Commencement and Valete dinners, plus Principal's dinners and faculty dinners with invited speakers.

Utilities (electricity, gas, water)

Fees include all utilities.

Telephony

All rooms have phones on the ANU system. ANU internal calls are free. Local and long distance calls are charged at reasonably competitive rates (cheaper than a mobile). All phones have voice mail.

Computer & internet facilities

Burgmann College has one computer lab which provides the standard University facilities, including printing and quota based free internet access. Each room has access to Wi-Fi and there is also access to ANU websites.  The IT crowd appointed by the College are here to assist with any computer problems.

Distance to amenities

The closest shop is next to University House, a short five minute walk. The nearest major shopping centre is a 20 minute walk away in Civic. There is a bus stop immediately outside the college that can take you to Civic, Belconnen, or Woden. Cycling is encouraged and we provide secure lockable bike storage.

Academic support

A team of Residential Advisors live in the College. Residential Advisors are selected by the College based on their high academic standards, pastoral care skills, and leadership capabilities. Residential Advisors are available for personalised assistance in their academic areas. The Principal lives on site and is supported by the Deputy Principal and Community Coordinator. Burgmann's residential staff have completed higher degrees and are able to assist in a range of areas related to student needs and participate in the lively academic lifestyle of the college. A residential staff member is always available after hours to handle emergencies.

Musical facilities

We have a music room with 24 hour access. We have pianos, tutorial rooms, common areas, TV rooms and a chapel as a multi faith venue for services, celebrations, reflection and functions. These facilities are shared between all residents.

Clothes washing

A communal self-catered laundry block is centrally located in the village. The washers and dryers are free, but you must provide your own washing powder. Communal clothes lines are also available.

Parking

Parking is available at standard ANU student rates, including a limited number of secure reserved places in the Dickson parking precinct. Canberra's network of bike paths and public transport is quite good, so we encourage residents to save money and not bring a car.

Cleaning

Residents clean their own rooms and must contribute to the cleaning of their unit. Residents are provided with access to vacuum cleaners, mops and buckets. All common areas in apartments are inspected monthly, and rooms are inspected up to four times a year.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited in all University buildings. Designated smoking areas are located outside.

Disabled access

There are a small number of rooms available for students with physical disabilities.
