About this scholarship

 

The PhB Science Scholarship provides support to new first year PhB Science students from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or to assist PhB Science students in relocation costs to support their moving to Canberra. Funded by the ANU College of Science, the award is for the first year of studies only, paid in two instalments.

Up to ten scholarships are available. Of these, up to eight will be for applicants applying for admission to ANU through the direct Admission, Scholarship and Accommodation (ASA) application, and up to two will be for international/domestic applicants not applying via ASA.

Eligibility

 

The Award is available each year to a commencing ANU student who:

  1. is a domestic or international student; and
  2. receives an offer of admission to the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) - Science or the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) - Science/Bachelor of Science (Honours) ANU-NUS joint degree program; and
  3. has not previously enrolled in any undergraduate degree program.

Selection

Only applicants who meet all the eligibility criteria will be considered. Selection is made on the basis of applicants meeting the eligibility criteria and their answers provided in the ASA application or the Award application as outlined below. If there are more eligible applicants than there are awards available, applicants must satisfy one or more of the following criteria (in order of priority and where applicable) to be considered:

  1. financial hardship;
  2. Indigenous Australian;
  3. long-term medical condition/disability or ongoing effects of abuse;
  4. refugee status;
  5. attended their final years of schooling at a low ICSEA school (school below 1000);
  6. attended their final years of secondary education at a rural school, defined in accordance UAC EAS category S01R;
  7. resides outside of Australia prior to the commencement of their PhB (Honours) studies

If Awards remain after consideration of applicants against the above criteria, then the Award is available to a prospective ANU student who satisfies one or more of the following criteria (in order of priority) and ranked by severity:

  1. resides outside the Canberra region prior to the commencement of their PhB (Honours) studies;
  2. has the most total equity adjustment factors;
  3. resides in a remote or regional area as determined by the geographical classification defined by the Australian Statistical Geography Standard - ASGS 2016;
  4. lives the furthest distance from the Canberra region prior to the commencement of their PhB (Honours) studies.

Preference may be given to applicants relocating from difficult to access locations.

The scholarship offers a stipend of $6,500 paid in equal instalments in the first year of study.

All applicants applying for admission to ANU through the direct Admission Scholarship and Accommodation Application will be automatically considered for the award based on them meeting the eligibility criteria and electing to be considered for scholarships.

International students and domestic students not applying via ASA, must submit a statement addressing how they meet the eligibility criteria and attach relevant documentation to support their claims. The application and all supporting documentation (where applicable) must be submitted to science.enquiries@anu.edu.au on, or prior to 26 January in the year that they are commencing studies.
