The scholarships are open to Australian citizens who are graduates of Australian universities or a recognised institution in Australia, who have completed a Bachelor degree with Honours (AQF Level 8) or equivalent (AQF Level 9 Extended) at a recognised institution in Australia. AQF refers to the Australian Qualifications Framework.
In accordance with the Trust Deed, preference will be given to past or present members of the Australian Armed Forces (whether permanent or Reserve) and their lineal descendants. A definition of lineal descendants is available in the Conditions of award document.
Special consideration will also be given to lineal descendants of a member of the Australian Armed Forces who died as a result of any occurrence which happened while serving in the Second World War, subsequent wars or on non-warlike operations (such as peacekeeping or humanitarian operations).
In awarding the scholarships, consideration will be given not only to educational atttainments but also to the applicant's character and personality (as expressed in a statement of co-curricular engagement),their financial means, and any impact on the applicant resulting from their or their nominated forebear's service in the Armed Forces. Special consideration will be given to applicants suffering financial hardship
