About this scholarship

 

Each year the Australian National University ("ANU") may offer up to five (5) awards known as the George Alexander Foundation Scholarships.

The objectives of this award are to support:

  • commencing students who must move from rural, regional or remote areas in orderto undertake an undergraduate degree at the University;
  • students who demonstrate strong academic merit, community involvement and leadership potential.

Funding for this award has been provided by the George Alexander Foundation (GAF), which was established in 1972 by Mr George Alexander to provide grants for public charitable purposes in Australia, with an emphasis on supporting talented young people pursue their potential.

The award is available to prospective ANU students who:

  • is an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident;
  • receives an offer of admission to an undergraduate program at the University;
  • is an immediate school leaver ie. currently completing year 12 and will commence tertiary study in the following year ;

Additional information

 

The award is valued at $24,000 in total. The recipients would be able to opt for a 3 or 4 year option. Payment would be $8,000 per annum (for 3 years) or $6,000 per annum (for 4 years), paid in two instalments at the beginning of each semester.

All applicants applying for admission to ANU through the direct Admission Scholarship and Accommodation Application will be automatically considered for the award based on them meeting the eligibility criteria and electing to be considered for scholarships.

Eligible candidates will be contacted to provide the following information to be assessed by a selection committee.

  • A personal statement of no more than 1,000 words outlining the personal and professional benefits of your program of study and how the scholarship would support your study goals.
  • An academic reference from your principal, head of year, careers advisor or a teacher from your school. The academic reference should be a summary of your last 2 years of school and speak to your academic performance and any extra-curricular activities.
  • A character reference by someone suitable to comment on your contributions to the community and your leadership potential.
  • An up to date Resume/CV.
  • A Values Statement where each response is no more than 200 words. A form template is available under the reference document section on this page.

Selection

Selection is made on the basis of academic merit and written application.
