Appeal an exclusion

Internal appeal

Students who are excluded from their program of study due to unsatisfactory academic progress are able to appeal the decision of the Education Dean to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Time in which to lodge an appeal

Students have 20 working days from the confirmation of exclusion letter. This date is included in the confirmation of exclusion letter.

Grounds for appeal

An appeal to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor is limited to procedural grounds only. This means you must identify where the university has not followed its academic progress rules, policies and/or procedures correctly and appropriately.

How to lodge an appeal

  • Review the Academic Progress rules
  • A formal written appeal must be lodged by 5pm on the date confirmed by the Academic Standards & Quality Office (ASQO) that is 20 working days from the date of the confirmation of exclusion letter.
  • The appeal must be addressed to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, but sent to ASQO as this office co-ordinates these appeals.
  • The appeal letter and supporting documentation can be either hand delivered to Student Central or email to the contact email on this page.

Outcome of the appeal

Appeals are determined as soon as practicable.

If the appeal is unsuccessful and the exclusion decision is not changed, any enrolment in semesters subsequent to the original decision will be cancelled. Any fees paid for the subsequent semesters will be refunded to the payer and you will not be entitled to receive results for this period of enrolment.

International students

International students' electronic confirmaiton of enrolment (eCoE) will be maintained during the appeal period.

External appeal

Students who are excluded from their program of study due to unsatisfactory academic progress and who have appealed unsuccessfully to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor may appeal the decision to an external agency. Commonly students appeal these decisions to the Commonwealth Ombudsman.

How to lodge an appeal

Students have 20 working days from the date of the internal appeal outcome letter. Students should follow the lodgement instructions provided by the external agency.

Please advise the ASQO that you have lodged your appeal and provide the appeal lodgement number.

If ASQO is not aware that an appeal has been lodged, action may be taken to cancel your eCoE once the appeal period has expired.

Your eCoE will be maintained during the appeal period if you appeal within the given timeframe and advise ASQO of the appeal lodgement details.
