This workshop introduces new students to what studying at the ANU involves. We discuss expectations of learning at ANU, and how to successfully manage these expectations. In particular, we offer effective strategies for managing your study load; participating confidently in tutorials, lectures, and other types of settings; and communicating with your lecturers, tutors and peers.
Worried about your English?
This workshop offers strategies to improve English language skills. Learn effective techniques to practice and extend your English, both in everyday and academic environments. In particular, we look at how to engage in tutorial conversations, how to practice your English on a regular basis, and how to apply these skills in your reading and writing.
Researching and finding sources?
Learn how to use online tools to quickly and efficiently find high quality sources to use in your assessments.
Writing in your own words
The ability to read and understand someone else's arguments, pull out its essential parts and convey their meaning in your own words is an essential skill at university. Indeed, summarising and paraphrasing are legitimate ways of incorporating evidence into your assignments in developing and supporting your own ideas, but they must be done properly to avoid charges of plagiarism. In this workshop, we examine strategies for writing effective summaries and paraphrases that pass the academic integrity test, and project your authorial voice so your markers know where you stand on specific issues.
Managing your time
This workshop provides strategies for prioritising and planning to make the most of the hours you have. Learn how identify how and when you study best, how to minimise study guilt, and make time for your life outside of uni. In this session, grab hold of wall planners, semester planners, and weekly planners.
Managing the reading
This workshop outlines a systematic approach for managing your regular weekly reading, and focused research reading for your assignments. Find out how you can read efficiently and get what you need out of a text. Using a sample text, we apply these reading strategies.
Learn why, when, and how to reference, and how Turnitin can help you. This session introduces you to referencing styles, and presents practical tips on producing citations and reference lists. Find out how to quote, summarise, and paraphrase appropriately, and how to avoid plagiarism.
Essay writing strategies
This workshop covers the fundamentals of essay writing in the Australian university context. You will learn what markers are looking for and how to analyse a question. You will practice techniques for finding and planning your argument and then communicating that argument through your writing. Using samples, we demystify the essay writing process by breaking down the component parts and show you how to go about writing one.
Report writing (sciences)
Find out how to effectively structure and communicate your key message in science reports. What makes a strong introduction and literature review? How do you present your methods and results? How can you tie it all together in the discussion? In this workshop, we use examples to identify what makes an effective science report and present writing strategies to clearly communicate your key message.
Report writing (business)
The most essential element of an effective business report is that it has a key message. In this workshop, learn how to write an effective business report by developing techniques to help you find and communicate your key message. Using a sample report, we demonstrate how to systematically convey and support your key message through an executive summary, introduction, and structured paragraphs.
Developing and delivering presentations
This workshop will give you some key techniques for structuring and delivering a presentation with a purpose and with confidence. Learn some effective strategies for communicating your message clearly and systematically, including: developing a persuasive structure; using signposting language to guide the listener through your ideas, and appropriately utilising visual aids. The session will also offer tips on public speaking and overcoming nerves.
This workshop offers strategies for preparing for exams systematically and sustainably throughout the semester. We look at how to study for different types of exams, tools for organising and studying the material before the exam, and managing priorities within the exam. Learn how to prepare for exams in a way that reduces stress.
