"I feel that even if I can help one person, that I hope somehow, I am making a difference... and you make friends! I love the team of volunteers that I work with - it's one of the reasons I volunteer."
Grace is a volunteer with the Community Ambassador Program, with the ANU Access and Inclusion team. Every Monday for the past two years, Grace has visited schools in Goulburn to run a homework centre for students from low socio-economic backgrounds who often face a range of educational disadvantages. Grace is passionate about addressing disadvantage in education, it gives her the opportunity to do something tangible with her sociology degree, by enabling her to act on the theory she is learning at ANU. She also has a deep connection, and understanding of these students because she comes from rural area and believes that if "I can do it, you can do it too!"
Through volunteering with the Community Ambassador Program, Grace has learnt personal development skills, leadership, initiative, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the will to just go for it! ANU+ is a new program for all ANU students. As a structured program, it encourages people who want to volunteer but haven't yet prioritised it, to actually do it. "Access and Inclusion, always need more people, so get involved!"
