What is a student card?

Your student card identifies you as a student enrolled at the Australian National University. It carries your photograph, your name and Student ID number, and says whether you are full-time or part-time. You should get your student card when you enrol for the first time.

What can your student card be used for?

Your student card has many uses, both around campus and off-campus, such as:

    • borrowing from the library
    • for access to computer laboratories or other secure areas on campus
    • as identification in exams
    • access to sports facilities
    • proof of student status (for obtaining student discounts, such as concessional bus or movie tickets)

You will need to keep your card in good condition, and if the signature or photo is damaged or becomes unreadable you will need to get a new card. This is because damaged cards can't be used as proof of identity for exams.

Card security

You are personally responsible for the use of your card, so you should make sure that it is secure at all times. In particular, don't lend your card to anyone else. Be aware that misuse of the card may involve a breach of the University's Discipline Rules.

If you lose your card, inform Student and Academic Services immediately. See How to get a replacement card.

Production of your student card involves taking a picture of you via video camera. This image is stored on the student card system. Your picture will not be used outside the University for any other purpose without your expressed permission to do so.

Getting your first student card

Student cards are available from Student and Academic Services (SAS). During peak enrolment times in February and July cards may be issued from other venues to make the enrolment process more convenient for you - check with SAS for details. Your card will be available on the day after you register your enrolment and you will be given an appointment time when you enrol to have your card made up.

How to get a replacement card

If you lose your student card or if the photo or signature on your card is damaged or difficult to read you will need to get a new one. Please telephone Student and Academic Services immediately if your card is lost.

To get a new card, come to the enquiry counter at Student and Academic Services (check SAS opening hours) and bring identification. Replacement of a damaged cards is free.
