Student Cards

The Use of the Card

Production of a student card involves capturing your image via a video camera and storing the image on the student card system. The image is then combined with personal data downloaded from the Student System to produce the card. While your image is stored on the computer it will not be used for any other purpose without prior approval. Your student card remains the property of the University at all times and must not be defaced or altered for any purpose.

The card has a number of uses:

  • library card – for borrowing library materials and determining your borrowing rights;
  • security card – for access to computer laboratories and other secure areas of the University;
  • examination identification – access to and identification at each examination you undertake;
  • access to sports facilities;
  • proof outside the University where proof of student status is required;
  • identification on campus.

A student card is only available to enrolled students.

Issue of the Card – Where and When?

Student cards are normally available from Student Administration Services in the ANU Student Exchange, Building X-005, 121 Marcus Clarke Street.

During the peak periods of February and July student cards may be issued from alternative venues. Please check with Student Administration Services for details.

New students: Student Cards will be issued on the day of registration of enrolment; details will be given out at time of enrolment.

Re-enrolling students will have existing cards re-validated each year or new cards issued after re-enrolment.

Conditions of Use for Student Cards in Security Access Controlled Areas

Security card access systems have been installed in various University facilities (computer laboratories, halls of residence, etc.) making some available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In order to protect equipment in these facilities it is essential that the following guidelines be followed. Failure to do so may result in individual cards being disabled.

  • Always swipe your card when entering or leaving through a security door, even if the door is already open.
  • Do not lend your card to anyone as you are responsible for its use.
  • You must show your card to University staff in secure areas if requested.

If your student card fails to work, contact ANU Security (John Yencken Building #45) to check the magnetic strip on the card.

Every time you swipe your card to enter or leave a room, the system logs this and displays the information on a console at ANU Security. All alarm conditions (holding the door open, breaking the glass on the emergency exit, etc.) will also be displayed.

If your card fails to let you out of a room or building, call ANU Security on ext. 52249. The emergency break glass exits are to be used only in the case of a genuine emergency e.g. fire.

Lost and Stolen Cards

If you lose your student card you should inform Student Administration Services and ANU Security (6125 2249) immediately, to cancel the card and ensure that you will not be responsible for any use made of the card by another person.

Replacement cards may be obtained from the enquiry counter in Student Administration upon presentation of identification, payment of a $25 replacement fee and confirmation of your enrolment status.

If the photo or signature on your card is damaged or difficult to read, you should bring the card to Student Administration Services for a replacement card. Damaged and malfunctioning cards will normally be replaced free of charge.

Damaged cards may not be accepted as proof of identity in an examination room.
