Conduct of Examinations

Identification

On entry to an examination room you will be required to produce your student card. The card must be displayed on the desk for the duration of the examination. Students who arrive without a student card will be required to provide other appropriate identification, namely a current drivers license or current passport and demonstrate their eligibility to sit for the examination.

Students who do not have appropriate identification with them on entry to an examination room, may still sit for the examination if they sign a Statement of Identification declaration form. Students who sign such a declaration and who do not subsequently present themselves with an appropriate form of identification at the Examinations and Graduations Office before the end of the examination period will have ALL of their examination results in the relevant semester withheld until they fulfil their obligation under that declaration.

Study Period

Students will be admitted to the examination room in sufficient time to make full use of the study period permitted for that examination. The study period immediately precedes the commencement of the examination.

Students must not write in script books during the study period, but may make notes on the examination paper if it does not contain provision for answers. If the paper does contain provision for answers, then notepaper will be provided by the Examinations and Graduations Office. Students may refer to permitted materials during the study period.

Examination Protocols

The invigilator in charge of the examination room will advise students when they may commence writing. Students may enter the examination room up to 30 minutes after the commencement of the examination.

Students who arrive late will not be allowed additional time.

Students are not permitted to leave the examination room until 30 minutes have elapsed from the commencement of the examination. To avoid disturbance to other students, no student may leave the examination room during the last 30 minutes of the examination, unless circumstances permit the invigilator in charge of the examination to vary that time.

No loose notes, papers, manuscripts, books, notebooks or electronic devices shall be brought into the examination room unless use during the examination has been specifically permitted by the examiner. Prohibited electronic devices include, but are not confined to: mobile telephones, electronic notebooks, organisers, dictionaries, programmable calculators and laptop or palm computers.

Note: valuable personal items should not be bought to any examination.

If, during the examination, any student is found in possession of unauthorised material or electronic devices, that student shall be reported and action taken under the Discipline Rules.

Students from Language Backgrounds other than English

Students whose first language is not English may, with the approval of the college Department responsible for the course, use dictionaries during the examination. If you wish to use a dictionary, please contact the college Department concerned for a letter of authority to take the dictionary into the examination room. If approved, dictionaries with the letter of authority must be presented to the Examinations and Graduations Office (lower ground floor, Melville Hall) the day before the examination.

Students from Language Backgrounds other than English should see section 5.10 for further information on examination arrangements.
