1. Admission

1.2 Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN)

As part of the Commonwealth Government's higher education reforms, all eligible new and continuing ANU undergraduate students from 2005 onwards will be allocated a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) in their program of study.  Holding a CSP means that you pay a (reduced) student contribution amount to ANU, rather than paying full tuition fees.  The Commonwealth Government funds the rest.

CSP students (other than New Zealand and new permanent residents students) are eligible to apply for a HECS-HELP loan to finance their student contribution liability.

All eligible new and continuing CSP students will also be allocated seven units of Student Learning Entitlement (SLE).  In simple terms, this means that you have seven years to complete your study as a Commonwealth supported student (if you enrol in a normal full-time pattern).
The Commonwealth Government will manage your HECS-HELP loan and/or your SLE by allocating you a Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN).  This is a unique identifier that will stay with you for life, even if you enrol in another university.  You will be able to check your loan and/or consumption of SLE, as well as other personal information, on the "Going to Uni" website www.goingtouni.gov.au

How do I get a CHESSN?
All new ANU students will be allocated a CHESSN as part of the application process.

The CHESSN only becomes activated once your enrolment becomes effective, i.e. once the Census Date has passed for your Semester/session of enrolment.  For Semester 1 courses this is 31 March and for Semester 2 courses this is 31 August.
